Patrick Altes

Patrick Altes is an artist of French/Spanish origins, whose work is deeply informed by his own personal history. Born into a working-class family in Algeria during French colonial rule, Altes’ awareness of inequality and repressive regimes grew early. As a young adult, he lived in South Africa for two years under the apartheid regime, working at the University of Fort Hare, a key institution in higher education for black Africans which counted among its alumnae a number of prominent opponents of the apartheid. This experience of a society based on discrimination, repression and deprivation of civil liberties for a large part of the population deeply marked Altes and fuelled his commitment to equality and human rights.

Since moving to the UK in 2006, Altes gained an MA in Fine Art from the University of Brighton in 2008. His work has made a distinctive contribution to post-colonial discourse and the emerging Franco-Algerian art movement. He is interested in the evolving relationship between the contemporary world and our deeper humanity. He was twice recipient of the prestigious Leverhulme Trust Award.  He co-curated Algerianism 1, as part of the pan-Arabic Nour Festival in London’s Kensington and Chelsea (2015).  He also participated in the 3rd Biennale of Mediterranean Contemporary Arts in Oran, Algeria (2014), Art Bahrain (2015), the 7th International Festival of Contemporary Arts (FIAC) at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts in Algiers (2015),) Art 16 London (2016, the 4th Biennale of Mediterranean Contemporary Art in Oran (2017) and London Art Fair, Islington (2020).  Some of his work is held by the Museum of Modern Arts of Oran (MAMO), the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Arts of Algiers (MAMA) as wells as many international private collections.

Simon Chinnery

“I paint abstracts in mixed media including acrylic, plant powders and oils. My work is full of energy and movement with my inspiration coming from natural landscapes and the amazing worlds you can see if you look closely at things.

I have a fascination with natural images of light, colour, abstract shapes, and the cycle of growth, decay and seasons. I’ve been told that there is a bit of dream-like messiness in my work as I try to articulate feelings into organic energy.

I feel that my paintings say something about the joy of painting as an expressive act and for that very reason alone cause us to think not only about the darkness we carry with us, but also the colour, the brightness and the light, and how the contrast of these make us human.”

Ru Knox

Ru Knox is an English artist who has spent years as a professional classical portraitist, fulfilling private commissions and exhibiting both in the UK and abroad with much success in international competitions.

Ru combines this rigorous formal structure with his own original ideas, displaying his unique and personal style. His work has developed from pure traditional representation to a more contemporary approach, but retains references to his training.

He has a rare and potent emotional expression which has culminated from years of imaginative experimentation with various techniques and textures, but his legacy observational precision and handling still capture the psychology and immortalise the souls of his portraits.

Henrietta Stuart

My paintings have developed over the years from abstracts based on still life to compositions woven from images taken from the natural world. My inspiration as always is from places and images that I have seen. The compositions are worked up from extensive drawing, of the landscape. The finished pieces range from almost totally abstract compositions evoking a sense of place to more easily recognisable landscape images: the natural world modulated by time and season, disclosed by visual texture and colour.

Colour and light and drawing are very important to me. Colour is used to evoke emotion, and gives a sense of time and place; light is used to create space and to mask and hide objects, creating a sense of mystery. Drawing is giving me a greater idea of place and gives a greater structure to my paintings.

Tammy Mackay

“My work is a journey of feelings linked to an object, moment or past memory. Images are often conceptualised as a series, the most recent being my series called “HOPE and FEAR”. All are personal explorations of themes that are both layered in-process and layered in meaning. Animals and birds have become central to my current work and convey a subtle symbolism within their depiction.

I have a passion for printmaking which has always been my main form of expression. Etching and monoprint have generally been primary mediums, but I have always experimented with new techniques. More recently I have used photopolymer plates and drypoint. These techniques are often combined with hand-drawn or hand coloured chine collé. Exploring and developing new techniques opens up new possibilities which I feel are essential to my development as an artist and printmaker.”
