Nature's First Green is Gold

  • Ad Lib Gallery 10 Church Road London, England, SW19 5DL United Kingdom (map)

Ad Lib Gallery is delighted to present Nature’s First Green is Gold, an exhibition of works by artists Shamani Surendran & Katharine Rowe. Through photography and painting, Shamani and Katharine bring together a series of images inspired by nature, very often rooted in local Wimbledon landscapes.

The exhibition borrows its name from Robert Frost’s poem ‘Nothing Green Can Stay’. The poem expresses nature’s fleeting character and uses the end of Spring as a metaphor for the transience of youth and beauty. Ultimately, Frost urges the reader to live in the present and appreciate nature/ life whilst we have it, to relish the golden moments, emphasising its impermanence.

Katharine’s paintings are mostly of late Spring, just at the time when the ‘gold’ turns to green. Shamani’s photographic images are from her new series “The Last Bird Song” which explores the effect of climate change on the cycle of the seasons and eventually on nature itself.

Shamani was born in Malaysia and prior to moving to the UK resided in Australia for several years. She lives with her family in Wimbledon and is a keen photographer. She has always been interested in taking photos but became passionate about photography in 2020, during the pandemic, whilst on solitary walks with her beloved dog Flint.

Katharine Rowe is a London-based artist renowned for her use of colour. Working from her home studio in Wimbledon, Katharine is a self-described colourist.

Her creative process often involves spending considerable time mixing paints to achieve deliberate and impactful brushstrokes. She primarily uses Michael Harding oil paints for their unparalleled colour quality and prefers linen canvases for their texture.
