Between Spirit & Surface

  • Ad Lib Gallery 10 Church Road London, England, SW19 5DL United Kingdom (map)

This autumn, Ad Lib Gallery presents Between Spirit and Surface, a group exhibition featuring works by Colette Moscati, Emma Tweedie, Sarah Cox and Hanna Wildman.

The exhibition explores painting as both an instinctive, emotional act and a material, process-driven practice. Each artist offers a distinctive response to this duality, examining the interplay between intuition and technique, memory and mark-making.

Together, their works invite viewers to look beyond the painted surface and consider what connects the inner and outer worlds of artistic expression.

Private View, 30th October, 6 - 8 pm

For Colette, painting is a visceral celebration of life. Drawing deeply on her own experiences, she channels amplified colour and dynamic mark-making into compositions that radiate emotional intensity. Inspired by landscapes and places she has lived, her work reflects a deeply intuitive process where energy and beauty converge. Colette’s canvases are filled with abundance, inviting viewers to encounter familiar scenes anew, through light, colour, and movement.

Emma’s semi-impressionistic landscapes traverse the subtle boundary between soft abstraction and impressionism. Rooted in a spiritual sensibility, her practice explores the dialogue between nature and human consciousness. By layering, subtracting, and dissolving pigment, Emma creates nuanced compositions where control and release coexist. Her paintings evoke the elemental forces of land, sea, and sky while whispering of memory, ancient wisdom, and metaphysical energy. Each work becomes a contemplative portal, inviting viewers into quiet dialogue with place and spirit.

Sarah’s paintings are brimming with energy, rich textures and vibrant layers of colour. Like notes on a score, dynamic, gestural marks and flashes of vivid colour punctuate her compositions. Sarah’s work dwells in the space where the energetic essence of the land meets the expressive, tactile qualities of paint. The two elements - Spirit and Surface - lose their separation. Just as we come alive by walking in nature, Sarah says the canvas becomes a place from which her spirit breaks free.

Hanna’s layered mixed-media practice embraces imperfection and the quiet poetry of surfaces shaped by time. Using acrylics, spray paint, pastel, and collage, she builds tactile works that are as much about texture as form. Inspired by faded glamour and the raw beauty of urban decay, Hanna’s pieces carry a rebellious yet contemplative spirit. They suggest that beauty is not polished but found in the worn and weathered.
