Sarah Woods

The studio is her quietest space, a place that allows for a meditation on colour, space, and form. Textures within the landscape are explored through the tactile qualities of linen and canvas, guided by the tranquillity of her brushstrokes and the movement of paint. As she observes each landscape, she envisions how her brush will flow across the surface. To her, the ocean holds a softness that translates into the rhythm of the brush and the gentle harmony of her palettes. Her large-scale paintings reflect the meditative process of working by hand and are framed in unfinished oak, drawing attention to the natural simplicity of her materials.

Her palettes emerge from gentle, considered hues that evoke the quieter moments along the coast. The richness and warmth of midsummer light and the cooler tones of cerulean and Prussian blue capture the shifting moods of the landscape. As Georgia O’Keeffe expressed, “Making an object look like what you see is not as important as making the whole square you paint it on feel like what you feel about the object.”
