Sally Newton

Born in Hertfordshire in 1982 and growing up in Saffron Walden, Essex, with the call of numerous museums and art galleries of Cambridge close by, Sally was fascinated with art from an early age, kindly encouraged by her artist mother. The Fitzwilliam Museum shaped her fascination with renaissance and impressionist paintings and she went on to study her B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art (Printmaking) at Cambridge School of Art, graduating in 2004, with many of her lessons held amongst the brilliant paintings it hangs on the walls.

During her degree, Sally was fascinated by learning printmaking methods and was particularly interested in etching. The attraction of mark making and linear drawing is a compelling quality to her, though as her practice has developed, the potential of oil painting as a medium has been enduring and is now ingrained as her primary medium to work with.

Since 2019, Sally has been working from her studio on the Hampshire / Wiltshire border. The studio has been an important development for her, providing a dedicated space to develop and work. It also led to a pivotal Artist Residency (which remains ongoing), with the nearby mixed organic farm of Cholderton Estate, where she began a year long residency documenting all aspects of the seasons on the farm.

Biography continued:

During her residency, Sally began reducing her palette and finding different, more abstracted depictions of the landscape. This development led to increasingly abstracted compositions and larger-scale paintings. Sally has exhibited in London, Bath, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Berkshire at solo exhibitions, group shows and galleries. Her work is now held in international private collections across the world.

She was awarded the John Busby Seabird Drawing Bursary by the Society of Wildlife Artists in 2022, leading to a week of studying amongst seabird colonies in Scotland. This began a fascination with the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth where she frequently returns to paint the landscape. She has also collaborated with the luxury knitwear designer Navy Grey to create bespoke labels for them.
