Nicky Chubb

Nicky’s work is essentially optimistic. Whatever she is painting, the emotions she aims to evoke are hope and happiness. The trees of the countryside around her home—and the sense of time and belonging that comes from watching them through the seasons—quietly inspire and uplift her. She’s often told that these feelings are conveyed in her work. She tries to capture a sense of changing light in her paintings and enjoys the varied effects, happy accidents, and controlled corrosion that come with working in mixed media.

Originally trained as a designer (BA Hons Fashion, Central St Martins, 1993), the influence of her love of textiles can be seen in her use of colour, texture, and pattern.

She has been painting strong, stylised individual trees since 2012 and exhibits them widely. Her original tree and floral paintings are available from art galleries and at Art Fairs across the UK and Europe, and her work has been shipped to collectors as far afield as Japan, Australia, and the Cayman Islands.

Drawing the human figure—capturing moments in time and the shifting quality of light—has always been a parallel interest to her tree paintings. All her figure work is drawn from life, using mixed media and multi-layered combinations of collage, ink, and paint. She also applies this technique to floral compositions, creating lively bouquets with torn paper collage set against vivid backgrounds. She frequently incorporates recycled drawings and scrap paper into her pieces, working with an ethos of sustainability.

She is a member of the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society—the largest life drawing group in London—and also runs her own life drawing sessions in Hindhead, Surrey. More details are available on the Book A Life Drawing Session page.

In 2022, she was delighted to be accepted as a member of Surrey Hills Enterprises and awarded their Trade Mark, a symbol of local provenance, quality, and sustainability.
