Nastia Calaca

Exhibiting with Ad Lib Gallery at Affordable Art Fair Battersea, March 2025

Nastia had always dreamed of becoming an illustrator. Creating intricate illustrations, reinventing beloved book characters, and writing new versions of her favorite stories were all part of her childhood. One day, she unexpectedly stumbled upon ceramics. They fell unconditionally in love and have never parted since, having now been united for more than 12 years.

Living in a high-tech world of flat screens and omnipresent plastic, one might say that choosing dust and mud as daily tools seems somewhat unconventional. Perhaps it is, but she finds in it a childlike joy and excitement, much like when a four-year-old is allowed to jump in a puddle.

Personas and illustrations take shape in her teapots, pot holders, and little decorative statues. They begin their lives as flat images on printed pages but then come to life, as real and tangible as she imagines them. They can be touched, cuddled, hugged, and even kissed. As for her, she talks to these handmade companions, agreeing with them on the number of their fingers, the color of their eyes, inventing their past, and discussing their future.

Each piece she creates is unique. Even the copies she makes on demand differ from the original, each with its own mood and character—some gain a little extra weight, others develop charming wrinkles, and every one of them hopes to be loved and cared for by its new owner. With hand modeling and glazing, the final result is always a surprise. Unpredictably magical changes occur in the kiln, where every ten degrees add a new and exceptional effect.

Her creations travel extensively. Ever since she began her journey over 12 years ago, her charming little beasts have made their way to every corner of the world. One teapot resides in Japan, another in India, while a dozen plant pots and figurines have found homes in the United States. Many more now live in Sweden, the UK, and Italy. At times, she envies them a little, unable to join them on their journeys. Yet she never regrets letting them go, knowing they are destined for warm homes and loving families.
