Kate Valentine

Kate Valentine is a painter and printmaker from Aotearoa New Zealand, now living and working on Gayamaygal Country near Manly, NSW.

Trained as a printmaker and art historian in Auckland and Edinburgh, Kate returned to her art practice in 2025 after 20 years in cultural institutions, policy and tech. She is also a mother, and describes being obsessed with time passing too quickly. Kate paints portraiture and flora as sustained meditations on growth, time and impermanence.

In her current body of work, Time Series, Kate references the printmaking and silk painting of Edo-era Japan, particularly use of graphic line, flattened space, deep negative space and a fascination with simplified expressions of nature as a metaphor for the fragmented way we experience time.
