Jo Baker

Exhibiting with Ad Lib Gallery at Affordable Art Fair Battersea, March 2025

Following an illness in 2017, Jo revisited her love of art & design, studying various forms and ignighting a spark, which has led her on a journey she could only of imagined. Now in good health and proud of her battle scars, she wishes to share her story with you..

Why Fish? A frequently asked question! Jo recalls many happy days fishing with her late father as a child. His collection of glass fish remains her most treasured possession. She painted her first fish in tribute....and was hooked!

Initially dipicting her own story as the 'lone fish' pushing against the current, symbolising her journey with ovarian cancer and mental health, Jo hadn't anticipated how her story would touch others, encouraging positivity and self belief. As a new chapter unfolded, the symbolism of this 'lone fish' evolved into one of freedom, independence and joy.

The process...discovering the effect of reverse painting was an exciting happy accident! Keen on working with clear materials, Jo placed a piece upside down one day and had a Eureka moment! Seeing the way the transparency affected the clarity encouraged her to play and combine everything she had learnt, until she was happy with the results. Encouraged to share her new work, Jo took part in her first Art show in 2022 and was awarded Artist of the year.
